Did Lennon believe in every lyric he wrote? Does McCartney? Does every artist believe in every line or poetry, every stroke of the brush. Of course not and anyone who believes they all do needs therapy sorry to say. Did Lennon think for a moment while writing, "Imagine no possessions"? sure he did but clearly decided possessions was better than not.

It's art, it's creativity. Was every stroke of the brush on the canvas of the great ones perfectly shaped, textured, coloured? Sometime lines in a song are used only because the word and rhythm of the phrase works where the lyric has absolutely no bearing. Can some songs of Paul and John's be re-written lyrically? Sure, but then the spontaneity of song writing diminishes. If they did that, we certainly would not have had so many Beatle albums each one creatively greater than the previous. As a discussion it's great we can do this in theory, but practically, well there are so many thousands of acts who have tried to be the best at their craft. It all boils down to who we are still talking about and who will be still talked about a hundred years from now. Pure musical genius, raw talent, with all the flaws to enjoy.

while i agree with nearly all of jgkogac's observations...i'm not sure i do with this one. by 1982, most music fans had already decided whether or not, based on the strength of paulie's solo career, they were fans of paul mccartney. those that were on the fence...or undecided...(and what music fan would not have made up his mind by then?) may have been turned off by the duet. but i think if they were turned off it was because paul had done something so saccharine as ebony and ivory. not neccesarily because of racism.

Yeah.. the only problem with that is the original version of "Maybe I'm Amazed" wasn't a hit and the live version was. Ditto for the cartoon version of "Coming Up", at least in the USA.

Here's an opportunity to hear a firsthand account of what life was like for Paul McCartney and the rest of the Fab Four.

Barry Miles, a close friend of the 68-year-old Beatle, will discuss the Swinging London scene of the 1960s and its cultural impact at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 11, at Harper College in Palatine.

Miles penned McCartney's authorized biography "Many Years from Now" based on hundreds of hours of exclusive interviews over five years. He's also written books about Allen Ginsburg, William Burroughs and Jack Kerouac.

Miles will also discuss Indica, the counterculture art gallery and bookstore he owned with Peter Asher, the brother of McCartney's former girlfriend, Jane Asher.

How does the sound quality of the re-mastered "Yellow Submarine" compare to the 1998 re-release of "Yellow Submarine"? On the song "Let It Be", I have noticed that on the original version of LIB that George's guitar solo stands out. Whereas, on another version the guitar solo seems like drowned out or toned down. Why is that in the difference?

I've worked as a sound engineer. There is a difference between "recording" "mixing" and "mastering" in the process. Call these step 1, 2 and 3 respectively:

1) You probably know that songs are recorded on "multi-track" recorders. These days, multi-track recorders can have dozens (or hundreds) of "tracks" or channels. During the recording process, each instrument (voice, piano, guitar etc.) is typically recorded onto a completely separate track, which means that each instrument remains completely isolated from all the others. More instruments can be added to a song without having to re-record parts that already exist, for example, adding a string section to a song weeks after the main instruments have been recorded. Mistakes can be corrected on any instrument, without having to re-record other completed parts... such as fixing mistakes in a guitar solo or vocal performance without having to re-record the bass and piano parts.

2) During the mixing process, the producer and engineers typically take all the channels they recorded, and "mix" them into "2 channel" left and right stereo. Since each instrument is isolated from the others, each instrument can be processed and modified independently. The producers and engineers can change the tone, volume, and left/right placement of each individual instrument. They can add or remove effects on each individual instrument. They can completely "mute" or remove instruments that were decided for whatever reason to be excluded. During this phase, the mixing engineer and producer ensure that each instrument has the correct (intended) tone and volume. At the end of this process, you get the complete stereo recording.. that is sent to...

3) The mastering process. Mastering engineers work on taking the stereo recordings of each song, and assembling them into a final "mastered" album. They do not have control over individual instruments in any way. They work at the song and album levels, not the instrument level like in the previous two steps. They are responsible for making sure all the songs have consistent (correct) volume levels and tone, and that the peaks aren't to loud, etc. They set the silence gap between songs, add noise reduction and sweetening, and prepare the recordings for their intended medium (vinyl, CD, etc).

Often (but not always) the term "remastered" is a crock, and a way for the record companies to dig more cash out of your wallet. With "remastering", Stereo recordings are taken back to step 3. More often that you'd expect, you can "remaster" your own original copies by simply adjusting the EQ and tone knobs on your stereo, although this is a little bit of an oversimplification, but there's truth to it.

Onto your questions:

The more recent remastered "Yellow Submarine" and "Let it Be... Naked" were in fact REMIXED as well. That is, they were taken back to step 2, something only made possible by today's technology. The Beatles did NOT have multi-track recorders with dozens of tracks like they have today. In fact, most of their later recording were done on just 4 tracks, or 8 tracks for the last two albums. They were able to "approximate" having more tracks by a process called "bouncing". Simplified, they would record 4 instrument tracks, then pre-mix them down to one or two tracks of another 4-track machine. this would give them blank tracks to record more instruments on. when the second 4 track tape was full, they'd pre-mix onto another tape machine, effectively "freeing" more tracks. "Bouncing" is far less flexible than simply having dozens of tracks at your disposal, because you have to do mini-mixes that can't be changed, along the way.

Luckily, they kept everything from this process, meaning all the pre-bounced tapes. So for "Yellow Submarine" all the individual tracks from all those pre-bounced tapes were "imported" into modern digital multi-track recorders as if they were recorded that way, and then (re)mixed in true stereo. The result sounds fantastic. It is what the songs might have sounded like if they didn't have to do all that "bouncing" because of the old recorders. It's also not really "pure", which irritates the purists.

"Let it be...naked" was similar. By using the above process, as well as modern digital editing techniques better mixes and takes were created from multiple sources. Songs that were perfect except for a bad guitar lick or out of tune vocal were pitch-corrected, parts from one take were inserted into another, and what you have is a compete "remixing" of the original tapes. I wish they had just done this with the familiar, original takes of the songs (just because I'm more familiar with those versions), but I think its a good album nonetheless.

The older "remasters" are just EQ (tone) and noise corrected.

The Cubs got the go-ahead Wednesday to hold a nighttime concert at Wrigley Field on Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish calendar, but they’ll bend over backwards to minimize conflict.

Mike Lufrano, Cubs senior vice-president of community affairs, said the time of the Saturday, Sept. 18 concert — by either the Dave Matthews Band, Paul McCartney or Phish — will be pushed back until after sundown, when Yom Kippur ends.

Because the Sept. 17 concert coincides with Kol Nidre, the start of Yom Kippur, the Cubs have reached out to all three synagogues in the area: Anshe Emet, 3751 N. Broadway; Anshe Sholom, 540 W. Melrose and Temple Sholom, 3480 N. Lake Shore Drive.

“It’s really parking that they’re most concerned about. You won’t hear it because they’re far enough away. But, it’s fans coming to hear the concert at the same time people are going to worship,” said Lufrano, who is Jewish and plans to miss his first Wrigley concert to celebrate the holiday.

“We’re talking to them about parking lots that we could shuttle people from. There will be additional parking available with shuttle service provided.”

Lufrano noted that fewer people drive to concerts than to Cubs games, leaving team lots at two-thirds capacity.

“We should have space available in our lots if people want to park. But, it may or may not be the most convenient,” Lufrano said.

“We may end up working with the Park District about Waveland Park or other places. We’ll find a place where people who are going to synagogue don’t have to worry about looking for parking. They can park in a lot and take a bus.”

Rabbi Michael Siegel of Anshe Emet could not be reached for comment. Prior to Wednesday’s vote by the City Council’s License Committee, Chairman Eugene Schulter (47th) reported that Siegel had sent a letter endorsing the September concerts.

Last summer, the Cubs held an unprecedented three Wrigley concerts in one summer week — two by Elton John and Billy Joel, one by Rascal Flatts.

When the Southport Neighbors Association argued that it was too much, in part because of a conflict with the group’s neighborhood festival, local Ald. Tom Tunney (44th) called it a one-year experiment. He promised that, if it didn’t go well, “There’ll be no more concerts.”

On Wednesday, Tunney argued that the three-concert experiment was so successful, thanks to “neighborhood protections,” it’s worth repeating.

But, since Elton John and Billy Joel have cancelled their summer tour, Tunney asked the License Committee to approve only the two September dates. The Cubs may or may not seek approval for an additional concert in July.

“We’d like to. We’re working on that. But, we didn’t have anything today,” Lufrano said. “It highlights how difficult it is to find the right act to play in Wrigley Field.”

since friend jjs hath bleated on thusly, i have taken to task to research, in depth, the meaning of the song "house of wax":

and i have arrived to a most startling conclusion and it is thus;

it would seem, after a casting of artificial bones (so as not to offend the vegetarians) & and the shedding of virgin blood from...well...a pine tree...that the song, indeed , is as glaring an insight into the deepest, darkest secret of the life of one sir paul mccartney as has yet to be written !

coming, as it does, in a sequential aspect following songs depicting, in a fashion (incomplete ! i'm sure !) semi-autobiographical elements pertaining to the same sir p., this ode is chock full of dark, mysterious imagery has long provoked wondernments amongst those who would be fans (and, it has been said, may have led to a certain dementia...an addlement of the ego of certain same fans)..and, yet, it's meaning is simple !

'lightning hits...': well...the first unknown fact is that 'lightning' is, in fgact, the name of the yipping little peekapoo the mccartney clan had when sir p was a wee lad, living in liverpool. moreover, the 'house of wax' was the name of the lean-to/clubhouse that the wee lad paul, his brother, and other assorted friends would in fact congregate ! Indeed ! it is also well known, in those parts, that the small group of friends had, in fact, taken a name..a moniker, much as certain groups who gather might...and they called themselves...TA-DA...'the poets'

the meaning then, of the 1st verse, is of a sad occasion when, while holding a meeting of said gruoup, the dog did, in fact, pee upon the shack where-in the lads dwelled (lightning hits the house of wax)!

the lads (the poets spill out on the street) chased, gleefully, the wee pet, but it mistakenly turned left, when it should've turned right, and ended up running out between parked cars, and...well...(thunder drowns, trumpets blast)
they, only then, realizing their childish prank went too, too far, buried the poor dog in the back yard (CHAOS !)(hidden in the yard.underneath the wall) !

TIS TRUE !!

of course, the lads swore themselves to secrecy(poets scatter...)...but, the dog, much beloved by both the entire mccartney clan, as well as the neighborhood (the wee dog had once barked all night, alerting the neighborhood to a small fire, and prevented what could have been a larger tragedy) led to many of the kids (the poets) mothers searching through the neighborhood (women scream...like wild demented horses), but, to no avail...because, we now know the truth of where lightning was...hidden in the yard...

this tragic, yet completely true (well...as true as any of friend jjs assertions) is the single most important moment of the young mccartney life, up until the death of his mother, and as such, is a glaring look at how he would deal with the loss and pain of death...with obfuscation, deflection, and intense, artful imagry..the type of which all intelligent people have been listening, and enjoying, for all these decades...

or..so the russians would have us believe...
