The Beatles' first hit single Love Me Do reaches the milestone age of 50 today.

The 1962 release, which had P.S. I Love You as its B-side, only managed to reach number 17 in the UK but was a number one hit in the United States in 1964.

Famous for its harmonica riff, Love Me Do was principally written by Sir Paul McCartney and helped launch The Beatles in the UK.

To honour the fab four's first single turning 50, a world record attempt for the most people singing in a round will take place in Liverpool today.

Fans, choir members and school children will gather at Liverpool's Cruise Liner Terminal, Princes Dock, to perform the song.

It is hoped around 1,200 people will turn up for the Guinness world record attempt and staff from The Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts - which was co-founded by Sir Paul - will act as official witnesses.

The record for most people singing in a round currently stands at 897.

The attempt is part of a year-long programme of events across the city to mark Liverpool Celebrates 50 Years Of The Beatles.
