McCartney rated national treasure

Liverpool's beloved Sir Paul McCartney has been named as one of Britain's greatest living national treasures.

Natural history presenter Sir David Attenborough came out tops, followed by Stephen Fry and Sir Sean Connery.

The veteran broadcaster, 85, also triumphed over physicist Professor Stephen Hawking and Harry Potter author JK Rowling to win the title.

Broadcaster and wit Fry was second, followed by former 007 star Sir Sean Connery, and ex-Beatle Sir Paul.

Prof Hawking was fifth, followed by World Cup-winning footballer Sir Bobby Charlton, author Rowling, actress Dame Judi Dench, Welsh crooner Sir Tom Jones and Gandhi film director Lord Richard Attenborough, the brother of Sir David.

More than 4,000 people were asked to select Britain's national treasure from a shortlist, in a survey to celebrate the EuroMillions Millionaires Month.

People were asked to vote for the greatest "national living treasure", who they would like to see on a £1 million note. Sir David's image will feature on the note, not for circulation.
