Paul McCartney will play first concert at new Mets stadium Citi Field

  • Source: New York Daily News
The Beatles perform the first-ever concert at Shea Stadium in 1965. Former Beatle Paul McCartney will reportedly play the first show at the Mets' new ballpark, Citi Field.

He played the very first concert at Shea Stadium 44 years ago. Now, a touring industry website reports that Paul McCartney will perform the very first show at its replacement: Citi Field.

The site TicketNews.com says that “various reliable touring industry executives” have the ex-Beatle baptizing the sterling new stadium as a music venue with shows on July 17th and 18th, with a possible third performance added on the 21st.

Last fall, McCartney appeared at the final concert held at the now demolished Shea, as a guest star for Billy Joel’s series of shows there.

The proposed new concerts would take place during a break in the Mets’ schedule, between July 12th and 27th.

McCartney, and The Beatles, inaugurated Shea as a sometime concert venue with a historic show on August 15th, 1965. In the years since, some of the top musicians have played there, including The Stones, Bruce Springsteen, The Who, and Simon & Garfunkel.

As of now, McCartney’s only confirmed live date is July 11th, in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Calls and emails by the News to McCartney’s publicist, and the reported promoter of the event (AEG), were not returned at press time. Ticketnews.com asserts that an official announcement will arrive in about two weeks.

I was extremely excited to find out that McCartney was going to be one of the musicians to christen the new field. Though I was slightly more excited (perhaps due to the component of shock I felt) upon discovering that my boys, The Script, were going to be sharing the stage with such a legend. If you haven`t given them a listen I highly recommend that you do so at their Myspace page: the myspace website "/thescript" Enjoy!
