"When I did [this song] with Stevie Wonder - which
was a perfectly harmless attempt at promoting racial
harmony - some people said, 'Oh, it's just pap'. Well - sez
you, you know? I mean tough. The point is, there is some kind
of black-and-white problem... You can't deny that. I just
wanted to do something good, to do a song that I thought might
take a little tension out of the situation." (Paul McCartney,
January 1986)Producer: George Martin

"To me in a way, 'Junior's Farm' was reminiscent of Bob Dylan's 'Aint't Gonna Work on Maggie's Form No Mre.' So the idea I thought was we'll have another farm, Macca's Farm, and so the idea was to try and get a kind of fantasy about this person, Junior."Producer: Paul McCartney

"I did have an Uncle Albert that used to quote the Bible to everyone when he got drunk. It was the only time he ever read the Bible, but it was when he was drunk, He died a few years ago and he was a good man. He's someone I recalled fondly and when the song was coming it was like a nostalgic thing, 'I think I'm ganna rain' was the wistful line, really, and I thought of him. As for Admiral Halsey, he's one of your, and American adminral. I use these things like a painter uses colors.Producers: Paul & Linda McCartney

I originally cut it on my farm in Scotland; I did a
little version with just me as the nutty professor, doing
everything and getting into my own world like a laboratory.
The absent-minded professor is what I go like when I'm doing
those; you get so into yourself it's weird, crazy. But I liked
it. You know, I heard a story recently from a guy who used to
record with John [Lennon] in New York, and he said that John
would get lazy - but then he'd hear a song of mine where he
thought, 'Oh, shit, Paul's putting it in, Paul's working!"
Apparently that was one song that got John recording again. I
think John just thought, 'Uh-oh, I better get working, too'. I
thought that was a nice story." (Paul McCartney, 2001)Producer: Paul McCartney

Paul, talking about Freedom: "It gives people somewhere to put their feelings post-Sept. 11. It's a very simple song, but what it says is valuable, I think - "This is my right to live a free life.' Think about all the repression, either throughout our history or in certain places in the world right now, there are people being beaten up and tortured for thinking their government is wrong. So I like to remind people and myself that we're lucky to live in countries that allow you to speak your mind."

With John and me on a song, if I come up with some lines
which I know aren't really very good and I'm just hoping to
fool him, I know I won't. [This song] was the best example of
it. I though of the idea driving home from a concert in
Southport. I had 'She was just seventeen', and then 'Beauty
queen'. I knew this was rubbish, and that I'd put it down just
because it rhymed. When I showed it to John, he screamed with
laughter, and said, 'You're joking about that line, aren't
you?' And I realised that, in fact, it was and we changed it.

You see, with a lot of songs I do, the first line is it. It's all in the first line, and then you have to go on and write the second line. With 'Eleanor Rigby' I had 'picks up the rice in the church where the wedding has been. that was the one big line that started me off on it. With this one it was 'No one ever left alive in nineteen hundred and eighty-five.' That all I had of that song for months. 'No one left alive in nineteen hundred and eighty ... six?' It wouldn't have worked!" (Paul McCartney)Producer: Paul McCartney
