It was 1969 all over again as passers-by were treated to a free rooftop
concert by none other than Paul
McCartney. The recently knighted ex-Beatle performed for twenty minutes
on Friday on the roof of a building he owns in central London. It was all
part of a documentary he's filming about the making of his new album, Flaming
Pie. "There were quite a few people gathered below listening to him playing
live on his guitar," McCartney's agent, Geoff Baker, said. "Several of
them were rather mystified but Paul really enjoyed himself. It certainly
brought back memories for him." When informed that a crowd had gathered
on the street, McCartney replied, "I know, I've done it before." The Beatles
brought traffic to a standstill back in 1969 when they performed songs
from Let It Be on the roof of the Apple Records building. It was the last
time the group performed together live. McCartney played two songs during
the impromptu show, "Young Boy" and "The World Tonight," both from his
soon-to-be released album. Perhaps not so coincidentally, those two songs
are appearing on the soundtrack of the Robin Williams/Billy Crystal comedy,
Father's Day, which opens May 8. And we won't be at all surprised if we
see Sir Paul performing onstage at next year's Oscars.
