Regardless of all suggestions and comments by his fellow Beatles,
Ringo's "feel" for what a certain song needed in terms of rhythm and style, his precise beat patterns and his unique (at the time, later heavily imitated) "fills" made him a great drummer.
I think he's the best "discrete and creative" drummer ever !!
By the way, it's kinda easy to spot tracks/songs in which Ringo's drumming is absent. Paul's drumming (and at least one case of George's drumming) do stick out (in the bad sense of the expression) because they're not even close to Ringo's.
