I just got hold of a Beatles book by a German author with lots of interesting pix in it, and there's pix of John both from the May Pang period and some shot shortly before he was assassinated, and I can only say I agree with Steve here. In the "Pang" picture he looks really strained and as if under the influence of whatever "substances", as Ringo called them. In the 1980 pictures he might look older; he was 40 after all - I'm 40 too, and I must say he wasn't doing bad at all. But he was definitely more at peace with himself, and I think in one of the captions he said there were so many things he still wanted to do, he wasn't sure if he would get them all done before he died. A person who still has some goals is always more positive and optimistic than someone who is basically just hanging about, trying to cope with the fact that his wife has just sent him packing. And as they say in Spanish, a person's face is the mirror of their soul. I would definitely go for John in 1980. Though of course what I just wrote makes you infinitely sad, doesn't it. Wherever you are, Johnny, rest in peace...
It's the start of a journey
To a much better place
And this wasn't bad
So a much better place
Would have to be special...
