Matt Dusk covers "Please, Please Me"

Postby oldschooljazz » Tue Jul 20, 2004 12:13 am

Hi everyone...just wanted you all to get a glimpse into a new artist that I have enjoyed ever since hearing the CD at Universal. His name is Matt Dusk, and if you go to his website http://www.mattdusk.com, you can download a video that he did for his rendition of "Please, Please Me". It is definately worth checking out, as his version puts a different spin on this classic song...slower, more intense and romantic. Tell me if you all like it as much as I do. Keep in mind, it IS a cover of a band that we all know is hard to compare to, but it is great to me!

Oh gosh.... I've just had a listen to this version of Please Please Me...and it is terrible....absolutely godawful! It reminds me of the redhead guy in American Idol 2004 - John Stevens. Remember him? The guy everyone hated each week and couldn't sing or enunciate...yet each week he would be kept on the show to be Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson's punching bag...it was like the guy (and the audience) were dammed to eternal punishment each time, as he would do these dreary third-rate Dean Martin / Frank Sinatra vocalisations each week.

He had zero personality and had absolutely no feeling at all in his songs...the most hilarious moment was when he did Elton John's Crocodile Rock and made an utter fool of himself, yet somehow he survived the vote-off. This version of Please Please Me strongly reminds me of that.

(**shudder**)

Hey, notice the similarity with this thread and this thread: http://www.macca-central.com/MACCA-Foru ... php?t=3053

Oldschooljazz, I hope you are actually a Macca fan who will contribute to this forum and not just a one-time poster who drops by occasionally under various aliases to advertise this boring crooner's website.

And for what it's worth, I think Please Please Me would be better done as a hi-energy punk rock cover. Hell, even Blink 182 would do a better job than this Matt Dusk guy.

For you to say that another poster and I are the same person makes me laugh considering the conversation that I saw between yourself and "bluebird" after you both shared similar opinions about the cover (which is all that sinatrafan and myself have in common). A little too similar perhaps? Obviously SinatraFan and my self heard the CD from the same place. this should not discredit what I (or he) has to say.
On the other hand....if you despised the song I reccomended so much, I could understand that discrediting myself in your eyes. You were right to compare John Stevens to Matt Dusk, as they both have similar vocal styles. Maybe this isn't to your liking, but that does not mean that as a whole, this style is bad. And because Jon Stevens was a poor performer who was limited to one type of music doesn't mean that Matt Dusk is also a poor performer. maybe the cover is not music to your ears, but it is to mine...

In that case, I must extend my apologies, maybe I leapt to the wrong conclusion that there was a spammer in Macca-Central's midst. You know, the kind of people who register on a forum to say "hey come see this website", and then they vanish forever.

It would be good if you could come back and post again. We could continue to debate the assumed talents of John Stevens from American Idol. And a bit of Macca in between! :)

This is the same dude that is featured on "Casino" on Fox this summer. No thank-you. Not my type of music, but to each his own!

What's "Casino" all about? Is it another reality show? Like they line up some 'hot' stud who is a lowly casino attendant and 16 bimbo catty women and as they get eliminated, they really discover the guy is a millionaire or something like that?

Can't wait for it to hit New Zealand!

It's about the 2 guys who started one of those internet travel websites...and sold it for like 150 million a few years later...then put up 50M to buy 1/3, and controlling interest, of an older downtown casino, The Golden Nugget. It's kind of entertaining.....Mark Burnett is behind it, so it's done pretty well, as far as that genre goes. Dusk and his band are the lounge act, and he is a pretty good singer, in the Sinatra style. But he should probably stick to the standards, really. I have not listened to this, dont really care to, but I'll listen to him sing a Sinatra tune.

I'm a sucker for all these Mark Bennett shows - Survivor, The Amazing Race, Eco Challenge, The Apprentice, if I see this one screening in NZ I'll be sure to see it!
