Postby dsnito » Mon Aug 12, 2002 1:33 pm

Please somebody tell me, who is the "Sailor Sam" Paul mentioned on "Helen Wheels" and "Band On The Run", what he represents?? Liam, you´re British, so you should know the meaning, don´t you??

Peace.

'Fraid not. Haven't a clue. I always just assumed Paul put that in for a rhyme. I don't know - the guy crops up in Helen Wheels as well, described as being from Birmingham. I suspect that was just put there for a rhyme, again. I think Sailor Sam was just something Paul came up with for a lyric. But I honestly don't know.

I'm with Liam on this one.....Wouldn't it be nice to have as much scrutiny and serious books written on Macca's solo lyrics? Someone get on this!!

Steve, you're only 25 posts away from passing Airdog now - come on my son! (That's a British term of encouragement, don't worry!)

That and the fact that I had got up to about 940, and was poised to gain Gold status? Possibly. Mike, I hope you've backed this up already!

I thought that Sailor Sam was a kind of British personality...an officer of Britsh Navy or something like that... The fact Paul mentioned him on two of his songs made me curious.

Peace.

Well, I know that "Tommy Atkins" was the name given to the average british army man, so maybe there was something like "Sam the Sailor" or something as an equivalent in the navy. It sounds kinda right, now I think about it. But I don't know for sure.

On the medley "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey", Paul said once that uncle Albert was really his uncle, and I know there was a great US Navy officer called Halsey, Admiral Halsey, on the 2nd World War. Paul sometimes really did references and homages to existent persons as also did references to imaginary persons.

Peace.
