Noted by John as the beginning of the Beatles "self-conscious" period, Rubber Soul marked the transition of the band's writing from girl/boy love songs to more diverse subjects, such as "The Word" and "Nowhere Man". The album also marked the first time the band began to manipulate tapes to achieve a new or different effect, as well as use new instruments such as the sitar. Recorded in four weeks.

It´s been said Paul used to be fond of saying stuff like "Plastic soul, man - plastic soul" at that time. The album title would have a bearing on that. Does anyone know what the heck he meant by saying "plastic soul" ?

You can hear him say it on Anthology. I think it was a "trippy" kind of word....meaning quasi-soul, or imitation soul...a form of flattery and a tip of the hat to American soul music.

I never got into What Goes On. The bass is energetic but the guitar sound is so BFS (Beatles For Sale) that it ruins it for me. Also I don't think Ringo sings this very well at all. John should have sang this one.

George's guitarwork on What Goes On is some light country chicken'-pickin', fitting because it is basically a country song. No joke, this one is in my Top Ten, I've never considered it one of their knock-offs. To me it's the quintessential group effort. Ringo takes the lead vocal and IMO he does it and the drums perfect, one of his most brilliant moments. I agree that the bass cooks, and George does his thing right on track as stated above. John and Paul do some intense back-up vocals that are as authentic as any bona-fide open-throated bluegrass harmonizers.

The whole song is performed so dynamically and tight. The Beatles recorded it in 1 or 2 takes and never played it again. Too bad. Even when doing a country song, to me they did it better than the Nashville regulars--like the Lovin' Spoonful did on Nashville Cats, another great one. Of course, the Beatles earliest roots were in skiffle, and that was not that far removed from country. This would be one I'd still like to hear Ringo and Paul do together. Call me a nut, but time still stands still when I play it, I love it.

I Believe this is the last Beatles album in which all four Beatles worked, laboured on and recorded all the tracks together in the studio.After Rubber Soul, no more...
