Was John's solo career any good?

I think his strongest writing was during the Beatles years, and up to IMAGINE. The only album after IMAGINE that I found to be up to high standards was WALLS AND BRIDGES. The other albums have good and not so good tracks. But of course this is purely opinion.

John´s solo career

In short: lots of ups and downs, brilliant stuff side by side with
weak stuff. Pity about self-indulgence and Yoko´s influence/dominance (except her as inspiration for certain great songs of his) getting on his way.

you must also remember that john for a while wasn't too interested in making "pop" songs as opposed to social, political, and personal statements. I mean, he would never write a song like "listen to what the man said" or even "rock show"--based solely for the purpose to open a concert. stuff that he'd do most people wouldn't like anyway. you know, the beatle version of "rage against the machine".
