Lots of the Nuremberg convicts were hanged (Goering committed suicide a few hours before he would be hanged) but some got a prison sentence, like Speer, Doenitz, Hess. Speer and Doenitz actually got out after 20 years...

I think the only time "hanged" is correct when it relates to a person. They "hanged" those you mentioned and "I hung my towels up to dry".
