In 1991 Frank Zappa released a 2 CD set of live 1971 recordings of the Mothers from the Fillmore East, The Rainbow Theater and UCLA Pauley Pavillion. The CD is called PLAYGROUND PSYCHOTICS.
Lennon fans may be interested to know that FZ included the tracks from the show where John & Yoko joined the Mothers on stage. These tracks have been released before on John & Yoko's Sometime In New York City album, but the mix was quite badly done. According to Zappa's liner notes, Frank gave John a copy of the master tape and they both agreed they'd release different mixes of the material. One thing notable about Lennon's mix on STINYC is that he pretty much removed Mark Volman & Howard Kaylan (a/k/a Flo & Eddie) from most of the mix. Also Lennon's mix of WELL (BABY PLEASE DON'T GO) has a shortened ending. The FZ mix has an additional FZ guitar solo at the end. On the other hand the Lennon mix has a bit of FZ's main theme to KING KONG during the track JAMRAG. On the FZ mix, JAMRAG is retitled SAY PLEASE and AAAWK, and omits the small bit of KING KONG. The track called AU on the Lennon release is in reality Zappa's WEASELS RIPPED MY FLESH - with Yoko screaming her brains out over it. (WEASELS was the one note feedback drone track that was the title track of the Mothers' WEASELS RIPPED MY FLESH album.) The PLAYGROUND PSYCHOTICS mix of this track has been aptly retitled A SMALL ETERNITY WITH YOKO ONO. Ha Ha Ha.
Anyway, it's worth checking out. The rest of the CD is great fun if you like this period of Zappa's career. Along with songs from the 1971 tour, PLAYGROUND PSYCHOTICS includes actual tape recorded conversations between the band members made sometimes without everyone's knowledge while on the road. There's a humorous track where a promo guy from Reprise convinces the Mothers to pose in a garbage track for a publicity shot.
