I admit, looking at the evidence, it does seem our kid was making some kind if statement. At the risk of sounding preachy though, I have to say I don't care for "political correctness", which is far too pervasive in our culture today. This apparent slight made by Macca went virtually unnoticed then, but now is judged as 'racist' by today's standard. Has PC made our society any better? I say no. It has however made everybody hypersensitive to every off color remark, resulting in a less relaxed world.

agreed...

look, considering the devastations of the past, i fully understand being on guard...things have, in the past, often gotten out of control...gone too far...injured too many...for no reason

but there certainly seems to be way too much second guessing about really silly and trivial matters..

'course...if you'd been through what alot of people had been through...and you saw a pattern re-emerging...you mught just be a bit defensive, too...

i can see both sides...but somewhere, getting a better grip on things is far preferable to losing ones grip on all

The period in history is everything.

for example, in the 60's, African Americans were referred to as negroes. Not just by whites. But by other African Americans.

If no offense is intended, I agree, there is much ado about nothing in a lot of this stuff.

But, my immediate reaction to the Paul thing (Frozen Jap, peculiar photo in the sleeve-- all directly after the pot bust in Japan) was, as I already said, "hmmm."

Then again, Mr. H., you might be right. It might have been more tongue-in-cheek with a bit of "sod off to you!" directed at Japan's overzealous drug enforcement laws.

Problem is, those images and words, unless explained, can be taken the wrong way by the average Japanese citizen, or someone of Japanese descent. They don't come with little descriptions and disclaimers, i.e., "NO OFFENSE INTENDED TO MOST OF JAPAN, I'M JUST PISSED OFF AT YOUR GOVT."

I know it's not his song, but the decision to cover the Crossroads theme tune still baffles me, there was NO logic to it, so that can go in!

I was set upon by angry hordes for choosing "About You", and I promised I would give it my attention when I got it on my "Maccathon", which happened yesterday. Yes, I'm happy to remove it from my list, I think I got mixed up with something else. Anyway, in its place most definitely, and without chance of appeal, goes "Magic" from the same album. Awful, dull, tired, and, I suspect like a lot of the material from that album given its subject matter, something that the man himself holds little affection for.

I think "Magic" is a very personal song about Linda. I kind of like it. I doubt Paul has "little affection for it." But, I could be wrong!

I assumed it was about Ms Mills!

No, it is about Linda – check towards the end of this http://abbeyrd.best.vwh.net/drivingrain.html

Love the bass playing on that song. It's mournful
May sweet memories of friends from the past
Always comes to you, when you look for them

Now see, oobu, you're making us all angry again!
Seriously though, oobu, this song is, to me, magnificent. So sad and touching. He's remembering the night he met Linda at the Bag 'O Nails (It must have been magic, the night that we met- If I hadn't stopped you, I'd always regret). He's thinking back on the life they built together; marriage, kids, Wings etc.(Oh, what made us do it? Under what Holy spell? Nature's mother knew it only too well). He clues us in to his feelings at her death (She reached out her fingers to point at the sky, leaving me helpless- not knowing why) and the aftermath of her death (this is the hour that they turn out the light, nothing but memories burning so bright).
Paul's vocals and phrasing here are perfect for the melancholy that we're meant to feel. You're right when you say the song drags- it's supposed to. Perhaps your disinterest owes more to poor sequencing than to it being a bad song.

Just re-listening to it now with my new found knowledge.

So, my original opinion was definitely based on me thinking it was a song about HM, and of course now I know that's not the case.

But....as a song, I'm not changing my mind, it's drab, it's dull, it's disappointing, it's lacking in energy, it's everything that Paul and Linda's relationship wasn't.

Paul wrote some mighty songs about Linda, this isn't one of them.
