Let's Rank the First Singles from Albums

Postby jgkojak » Fri Aug 30, 2013 2:15 am

Since "New" is, well, new, let's go ahead and rank Paul's lead-off singles...
A few notes - *Helen Wheels doesn't count. Uncle Albert was released 2 months after Ram, so that doesn't count either.

1. Jet*
2. Silly Love Songs
3. Listen To What the Man Said
4. My Love
5. With a Little Luck
6. My Brave Face
7. Coming Up
8. No More Lonely Nights
9. The World Tonight
10. Dance Tonight
11. New \:d/
12. Say Say Say
13. Ebony and Ivory
14. Hope of Deliverance
15. Fine Line
16. Getting Closer
17. Press
18. Freedom/From a Lover To a Friend (take your pick)
Everyone's talkin' 'bout the President
We all chip in for a bag of cement

I like this topic. It alleviates my fears that New is expected to be among the best songs on the album. With a handful of exceptions, the lead singles really haven't reflected the best of the albums they came from, do they. Macca has often seemed to have difficulty identifying lead single material. Heck, even Jet was released as a single at the insistence of Capital sales guy, Al Coury. I think Paul has admitted he didn't initially think of Jet as a single.

Premium Grade:
1. Jet
2. Coming Up (like John Lennon, I prefer the "freaky studio version he did in his barn")
3. Listen to What the Man Said
4. My Love
5. My Brave Face
6. Silly Love Songs
Medium Grade:
7. With A Little Luck
8. Getting Closer
9. My Valentine
10. The World Tonight
11. No More Lonely Nights
12. Hope of Deliverance
Low Grade:
13. Press
14. Dance Tonight
15. Fine Line
16. From A Lover To A Friend
17. Ebony and Ivory (only beats out New because it is, at least and for better or worse, memorable)
18. New
Ahhh, Stick-ice-picks-in-my-ears Grade
19. Say, Say, Say

Now, I think that Paul has done mostly a splendid job with his selection of non album singles material, so let's also rank these, shall we? And I will include Helen Wheels as it was originally not intended for album. Also including movie soundtrack songs.

The Really Good
1. Live and Let Die
2. Junior's Farm
3. Hi Hi Hi/C Moon
4. Helen Wheels
5. Mull of Kintyre
6. Another Day
7. Goodnight Tonight
The Pretty Good
8. Give Ireland Back To The Irish
9. Mary Had A Little Lamb (ok, so I like nursery rhymes, big deal!)
10. Wonderful Christmastime (I know the choir of children practiced all year long and only came up with Ding Dong, Ding Dong, but I still like it)
The Forgettable
11. Cut Me Some Slack
12. Spies Like Us
13. Vanilla Sky
14. I want to Come Home

Am I missing any?

best first single for me is Jet but recently My Valentine and New have been very strong. As far as non album singles I like Junior's Farm best and I also like Spies Like Us
