I've had many listens now... and I really wish it grew on me, but it more grew off me... Again I hope it's like fine line - a little weak but then the album was amazing. "New" just goes nowhere. Plods along unchangingly, with weak lyrics that critics will love to attack. Fairly uninteresting bass line and upsettingly weak vocals. It's pleasant - the genius is still in there - the music is Beatley and pleasant. I could hum it after the first listen - all good.... but it is very throwaway. If it wasn't for the lovely little coda at the end you could loop the whole thing and not notice.

I still have huge faith - he often seems to plug the hell out of the worst tracks on his albums - Fine Line for CACITB, Ever Present Past (and Dance tonight to some extent) from MAF. I'm heartened that it sounds band-free. I know many disagree, and I love the band when he puts effort in (i.e. India with its great bassline etc), but he tends to let them musically take over on albums (all of Driving rain for example, except the one good track, Heath*r :-D or the excessively musically polished (and therefore clinical) off the ground). I like the noise that HE makes. I love his epic bass playing, funny guitar solos, odd piano licks and weird recorder passages, spray bottle, bisodol-jar shakers.... And now that his voice is fading I want to hear him more!

I remember thinking earlier how lucky we all are to be fans while he still is making new music. Imagine never to have to go through this agonizing wait for a new album, never obsessing over false track listings, bursting to hear a new single, not being able to rant on macca-central. It'd be very sad!

I disagree about Fine Line. I thought it had a cool chord progression and great harmony. It was a great kick-off to Chaos.

dang, jim....i'm near-totally impressed...beyond compare, even: agree wholeheartedly and with little reservation*...spot on, laddie !! :salute

*okay...'cept i totally agree w/stu on that point...have always and still like 'fine line' quite a bit

still...there's enough here to make me more than curious...and you're also dead on target about our paulie 'liking' the weaker ones...that alone bodes well

still...only 12 tracks...

there goes that dream of a double set...

You know there will probably be a deluxe deluxe version by Christmas. There's been a lot of "Fine Line" bashing around here lately...I love that one.

well, including right now, those singles take a lot more scrutiny...sometimes things change: New is still...well... new...maybe it'll be a grower ( i really don't think so...but i'm glad many are enjoying it)

there's plenty of macca songs, even albums, that some/alot have disliked at first, but then changed their minds later...so, who knows, right ?

is this 14/16 official ??

danged but i'm ready to turn japanese...

hmm...could be a single in there, i really think so
