It's a classic slice of McCartney pop, isn't it? At first it seems very familiar and simple (Penny Lane/Doubleback Alley!) then on the fifth, sixth listens you realise it's more complex than that. That rising harpsichord break that opens it feels very TOW/POP era to me (especially when it comes back the second time), but the rest of it could've fallen off MAF.

It's just the little things, like the way the bass is played, that make me very glad he's back. Roll on October 14!

Hi all,

Haven't done this in a while, but decided to take a stab at transcribing "New".

Please let me know if you see any errors. Happy to correct! Email me: fixitbrady@gmail.com.

Lots of love,

Ryan

Sometimes an initial reaction can be to positive but I take the risk. After a few listenings I think this is Mccartneys best popsingle since at least My brave face. Short and sweet but with a melody so catchy that you immediate got it in your head, perhaps one of the most Beatlessounding arrangemens Paul ever has done as a solo artist but with a clearly modern touch as well. The singing is used to the limit with Pauls current voice. What strikes me most is the total confidence in the delivery- iof the quality of this pop song in any way will be a trademark of the new album I think we are in for a real treat that even might standup to the hype and buzz

Thanks for the great job on the chords!

I've just downloaded it.... Is that it for promotion?! A few one word tweets?! Dance tonight (a fairly weak song) was promoted to extremes. I hope the album gets more promotion - I feel it will have a very beatley vibe that even non-obsessives will really like!

I had a lot to say about the song - but mr h atom said it all for me perfectly. Chugs along nicely, worrying vocals and really really uninspired lyrics. Great production, nice arrangement and his backing vocals are beautiful as always. Sounds like a mccartney-only production, which is great. He seems to work better left alone without a band as security. It's kind of like Fine Line - nice and light - and that was the taster single for such a great album. I think this will be the same - it bodes well :-)

mr h atom wrote::?

my initial reactions (not that anyone asked, but i'll throw them in :-D ) ?

nice song...kinda underwhelming, tho...

penny-lane-ish ? maybe...but i'm feeling that 'rehash-ish' is more like it...

not what i'd call a wicked strong start...more sort of middling...simply didn't strike me as very inventive...

the voice...hmmmm...seems weak...raspy...not very full...has that old person sound that some thought might've been done just to spiff up KOTB

lyrics ?? they simply didn't/haven't become memorable...even after a few listens...they're just sort of there...it's nice 'n all...but seems all sort of middle-of-the-record filler than screaming the THIS IS MY NEW STUFF note to the world...but that is just me

they did seem kinda...word-play-ful...maybe it'll take a few more spins to get a better feel...for the vibe to settle in...but i'm not humming it like i did so many others after first hearing them

listen...i fell in love with 'the world tonight' on near first listen...same for 'my brave face'...heck, same for 'dance tonight' which was far more pop infectious...

definately can see the throwback vibe some were trumpeting...glad ya'll are liking it though

My initial reaction is similar, underwhelming so far

Maybe it will grow on me, but I think it's kinda dull. I've listened to it four times, so far, and I think I am liking it less the more I listen.
Honestly, I think this sounds like it could be the theme song from some 90's sitcom TV show.
More Rutles-ish than Beatles-ish.

I have never liked Fine Line and that turned out to be a great album, so I am still hopeful that the album will be great.

Stop all the negativity towards The Rutles, I'm going to see them in concert tonight (Well, 2 of them....) and you're putting me on a downer! :-D

All I can say is I like it. The first time I heard it I had a big smile on my face. I've listened several times and I think it's good. Maybe I'm a little biased in my thinking but this is the kind of Macca song that grows on you. I've been humming it the whole morning. Looking forward to more of the same from the new CD. I hope the critics are kind to him even though they usually aren't. The voice isn't as strong any more but we all knew that going into this new music. Long live Macca and I hope there's a lot more to come!
