most dramatic slide in quality from one album to another

Postby chris » Mon Jul 15, 2013 6:40 pm

i'm posting this in a macca discussion because i know that's where most of the replies are going to be. and that is fine. but the answers do not have to be confined to macca albums. the title says it all. let's be fair and not include soundtracks or compilations albums...which means...the white album > yellow submarine is not acceptable.

macca...tug of war > pipes of piece
or...
macca...ram > wildlife
john...imagine > sometime in NYC
george...living in the material world > dark horse
stones...exile on main street > goats head soup
U2...joshua tree > rattle and hum
elvis costello...imperial bedroom > punch the clock
oasis...(what's the story) morning glory > be here now
I want to tell her that I love her a lot, but I got to get a belly full of wine.

I agree with your John Lennon suggestion, Chris. Imagine > Sometime in New York
Also Macca- Tug of War > Pipes of Peace
...and George Harrison- Living in the Material World > Dark Horse
The Beatles- Abbey Road > Let it Be (although truth be told, I love them both...and I know Let it Be was recorded first)
Radiohead- OK Computer > Kid A

Macca - Flaming Pie > Driving Rain.

I appreciate what he was trying to do with Driving Rain with the experimentation (I saw it as a kind of follow up to Press To Play) but it wasn't a great end result.

I could also have gone with Tug Of War > Pipes Of Peace

Ram to WL is a bit of a drop...as is V&M to WATSOS (..or, for that matter...BOTR to V&M !)...and FITD is definately far better than OTG...i gotta go with chris and say da winnah 'n champeeeen is Tug Of War to Pipes Of Peace

any time you get one of an artists all-time great efforts smack dab next to just about his weakest effort...now that's a sssllllliiiiiddddddeeeeeee !!!!

James...do you really think Flowers is much worse than Pipes of Peace? Or did you mean Press to Play is much worse than Pipes of Peace? Which leads me to ask...do you love Pipes of Peace? I'm not criticizing, mind you, just curious.
