King Curtis. Great R&B saxophone player who, like Al Jackson of Booker T. and the MGs, was sadly murdered and taken out of this world way too soon.

Right now I'm listening to his sax solo on "I Don't Wanna Be a Soldier" by John Lennon, and it's probably the best thing about the record.

His work with Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, and tons of others was just unreal. Along with the Memphis Horns, he was probably the most influential R&B horn player ever.

You can really hear his influence in David Sanborn's playing. (Especially "Young Americans" and "How Sweet It Is To Be Loved By You")

One of my friends told me it sounded "chaotic," lol. I said "I'm sorry it doesn't sound like Kenny G" and just left it at that. No use in trying to explain.

Sticking with R&B saxophone players, my musician of the day is Maceo Parker - played for James Brown, George Clinton, Prince, and many, many more. Great funky player. Almost up there with King Curtis. Going to see him in a club this weekend. Ought to be cool.

Recently rediscovered "Smoking Gun" by Robert Cray. Good blues rock.

good album that one....my favorite cray album is the r.cray/albert collins/johnny copeland effort : 'showdown!'

but any robert is better than most anything out there these days, right ?
