"Guru" Replies: Yeah Rick "Lap of Luxury" is such a great album from the Eighties and a great album period! It sold masses of units when it came out and then when things changed a bit in the fickle business o'music; it became a guilty pleasure to enjoy! Yeah man like you said "Let Go" is such a great track, not to mention "Never had a Lot To Lose" or the Orbison inspired "Ghost Town". It's a great album! So Rick I'm glad you notoced that one from my list!

I would have to say any Peter Gabriel album that wasn't "So". He gets lots of critical praise on his other albums, but "So" is the only one people really know.
Good call on Prince's The Gold Experience. I love that album!

Savillerowdie, I completely agree with you about both Armchair Theater and Double Fantasy stripped down. Everytime I listen to Armchair Theater I'm reminded how good it really is and I'm not much of a fan of Jeff Lynn's previous work. And Double Fantasy is a new album to me; full of great songs that were getting hard to listen to, what with the early eighties production values, but now it's a shining beacon of early Beatles style songwriting by John and a real treasure to my ears.

efghijiloveyou, I've only recently listened to Double Fantasy Stripped Down because I hadn't thought the material to be all that great on the original release. But like you said, I think I underrated the material as a result of the production. I'd always considered "Cleanup Time" to be a throwaway. Stripped down, it reveals itself as a much better song. The production covered up some cool stuff, like "Bubble, bubble, toil and NO trouble".

Although not a big fan of Yoko's stuff, I must admit that I always kind of liked "Hard Times Are Over", thought it wasn't too bad. However, I just love the Stripped Down version.
Why in God's name they ever mixed out John's priceless commentary throughout that song boggles my mind. It adds such a nice touch to the song that I immediately added it to my iPod playlists. "Hard times are over, hear ye, hear ye, come what may", "Collection will be taken, it's an offer you cain't refuse, heh-heh-heh-heh-heh!" and the "When I hold you in my armchair" reference to 'Happiness is a Warm Gun' just transform the song into a favorite for me.

And don't forget the radically different (don't know how you can even call it stripped down, cause it sounds like a different take) "Every Man Has A Woman Who Loves Him". It now sports a really cool ethereal vibe that kinda sends a shiver down my back.
