great read. very much in the grand tradition of d.t. 1-4; got pulled in right away. as with any really good king book, it's not so much the situation, but the characters and how they react to whatever is going on around them this another of kings forays into insight into rolands character.

one most likely need not have read any of the other dark tower books to like this one, but it might help: especially if you start proper with vol.'s 1-4 (since this is , nominally, part 4.5).

the bulk of the story, much like the great d.t. 4, lies not in rolands quest of the tower now, but in his past...and a rich, textured past it is.
this story just fills in one more gap, and answers a question about rolands relationship with his parents.

quite good stuff, these tales...

now, onto richard laymon and his take on the jack the ripper tale: 'savage'...

george r. r. martin's epic fantasy series the song of ice and fire. book 1, the game of thrones. book 2, a clash of kings. book 3, a storm of swords (the best of the bunch, so far). book 4, a feast for crows (least fave, so far). and waiting for book 5, a dance with dragons.

very much like tolkien's lord of the ring series...or even king's dark tower series. if you enjoy investing your time with characters you love...or want to love, but can't...or love to hate...try this series. amazing in a way that is difficult to describe.

and the series on hbo is pretty loyal to the books. if you aren't a reader, try the series.
