The Starkey years -- an exciting new thread

I've been listening to/watching a lot of Ringo this week, off the back of the new Fab Fourum podcast. So welcome to the new Ritchie Starkey thread, where we're gonna post some videos and have a chat about all things Ring. Whether it's a funny interview, a forgotten classic, or debating just how he managed to spend more than a decade in Mark Hudson's company, this is the place to do it.

back in the day, there was a who documentary, the kids are all right. it was a great rock-doc. in it was a clearly inebriated ringo with pal keith moon. talking about what they were drinking. medicine, they giggled like two school kids. adult medicine. okay, maybe not ringo's finest moment...but since he survived it all (unlike buddy keith) i can look back on it and laugh.

he really was a better drummer than many gave him credit for. i think his peers recognise him as being great. what do critics think of old richie? anyone know? he does/did something i always credited great guitarists for doing. not overplaying. sometimes it isn't the quantity of notes you play...but the spaces in between the notes...

I'm pretty sure most self-respecting drummers will tell you (if they've ever listened) that Ringo was/is a fine drummer. Most of them I've heard speak about his drumming say he's not technically great but instinctively great. Ringo alludes to this when he tells us that he can't play a song the same way twice, meaning the same fills. I've also heard producers saying they wish more drummers would drum like Ringo in the studio.

The only thing I really know about Ringo is he is a great drummer and he is a sweet guy. I am basically your Paul Girl - was, is and always will be so I think I will keep reading this thread and maybe I can learn something about Ringo I don't know and there is probably a whole lot.

Side topic, but I think that The Word is their greatest performance as a band

it's funny that you said that. just this last summer...i had that cd in my car (RS) and repeated that song about 2 million times. great bass. great harmonizing. and now, thanks to you, i know the drumming is pretty cool too.
