THere's an interesting book called Nigg#$. It's by a professor and he goes into detail on how they word is offensive. THe point you have to make is any white person who uses a racial slur even in terms of endearment or unfamiliarity is a racist.

Lennon wasn't a racist. But, him singing that song was stupid, ugly, and just lame. Besides, the song sticks. It isn't even catchy. It has to be one of the worst songs he has done and it was a single. I doubt anybody has hummed the melody.

Generally speaking, yes Chris. I agree with you. But I don't believe that applies in this case. As Nito said, Lennon used such a strong word in the song to make a point.

All jokes aside, I think the song is underwhelming, but John's message is POWERFUL & he was a courageous songwriter for going there. Really.

As for racism, neither he nor Paul are or were. Here's your proof: John DESPERATELY wanted to date Ronnie Spector (but she chose Phil), & Paulie wrote Blackbird for women like me! So there.

THANK YOU, Nich! I am of African descent as well (I never wanted to mention it, but now feel that I should. Not because I'm ashamed, but just because I didn't want it factored into this forum AT ALL.) And I TOTALLY agree with you. Like I said earlier, this thread is the ONLY time I have EVER heard a criticism about the word nigger in this song. From the beginning, I knew what John was saying. I've never been offended by it because I know the meaning of the song.

John ever had a controvertial personality and whenever he did activist songs, it was ever to SHOCK all the people...I understand Chris´s feelings because the lyrics may really cause a misunderstanding to the people.

Chris, you are once again going over the top. I agree with Ram.

The problem, as I have already said, is not with the content of the song, but merely with the quality. If WITNOTW had been a masterpiece, a timeless classic, we would not be having this discussion. We would all be agreeing that it was a very artful use of it. But the song stinks, so we're jumping on it for all sorts of reasons. Get a grip!
