Of course it was a joke. The Rutles were a spoof of the Beatles. But what is amazing is the music Neil Innes did for both Rutles albums. It's not just parodies of Beatles songs. It actually mimics the sound and feel of Beatles music but with wholly original melodies. Some of the songs could even stand on their own as "Beatlesque" songs apart from the Rutles context. They are as much an
homage as a spoof. Neil Innes is an underrated talent.
