Monkees guitarist Peter Tork reveals he's suffering from rare form of cancer

By Chris Johnson

Peter Tork, pictured in 1967, best known for his time in The Monkees, was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer called Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma and is expected to fully recover after surgery and radiation.

Former Monkees guitarist Peter Tork has been diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, it has emerged.

The 1960s musician and actor, 67, said he has a slow-growing form of head and neck cancer.
Called Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma, it is most commonly found in the salivary glands, but in his case was discovered on his tongue.
Tork made the revelation on his website. He explained: 'It's a bad news, good news situation.
'It's so rare a combination (on the tongue) that there isn't a lot of experience among the medical community about this particular combination.

'On the other hand, the type of cancer it is, never mind the location, is somewhat well known, and the prognosis, I'm told, is good.'
He was due to undergo extensive surgery in New York yesterday after making the announcement about his condition on Tuesday.
Doctors will follow the procedure with a round of radiation treatment and preliminary findings from a biopsy show that the cancer has not spread.

Tork's four-decade long career in the public eye started with the high energy made-for-TV band The Monkees.
The Emmy-winning television show, which ran from 1966 to 1968, still continues to be screened on television networks around the world.
The group has staged several highly successful reunion tours with three of the original members, Tork, Micky Dolenz and Davy Jones fondly known by dedicated fans as the '3kees'.
Despite the bad news, the star has remained upbeat and hopeful about the future.
In his online message, he added: 'I am extraordinarily grateful, amazed and humbled by the encouragement, affection and support I've received so far.'

Tork, who is the current bandleader of blues-rock band Shoe Suede Blues, even said he hopes to be back performing this summer.
He added: 'Barring any complications, I fully expect to honor a performance date I have this June with Shoe Suede Blues.
'We're appearing in Manchester, Connecticut and I'm looking forward to that and all our tour dates.'

And hinting at another Monkees reunion, he added: 'Well, never say never.'

In 1986 with the help of MTV and an enthusiastic blend of old and new fans their 20th Anniversary Tour was a massive success.
It led to a new Greatest Hits collection, a brand new hit song - That Was Then This Is Now - a popular video and a star for the band on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Following that comeback were several successful world tours, including one short-lived reunion with the elusive Michael Nesmith of the four-piece band.

All of the Monkees have pursued solo projects in between group tours and appearances.

In addition to his television and personal appearance schedule, Tork has taken up his pen as an advice columnist in The Daily Panic website.

He has also continued to tour Europe and the United States as a solo act and with Shoe Suede Blues, with whom he has also recorded two albums, Saved By The Blues and Cambria Hotel.

I hope he can stay as possitve as he possibly can. Although I never respected The Monkees musically, I do think Peter, and the show, was funny. My thoughts and prayers are with him.
I go back so far... I'm in front of me!
