Ok, Eddie, as far as the new Metallica song is concerned....I'll just say, I hope it's not the first single. It's not a bad song but it has not a single hook to grab you by the balls. The song is Ok, it's like they took some elements from the "Justice" album and some ideas from "The Black Album" and came up with this new track. Bob Rock would have widdled it down to maybe 5:00 mins instead of close to 8:00 mins. That to me, would of been ok because I feel the solo's and extra's from the new track, less interesting than what was done on say "Puppets" or "Justice".
Don't make a song near 8:00 just for the sake of it. I hope they've come up with some better tracks, Although this one is ok....but just ok.

I just heard it and I like it. It's definitely better than "St. Anger". On just one listening the song reminds me of Led Zeppelin's "Achilles Last Stand". It's not a rip-off but it incorporates a lot of different riffs and time complex time changes as the Led Zep song (and that’s where the similarity ends). Yes like someone posted earlier I can hear bits that are similar to songs from other albums but I think that's basically Metallica's musical vocabulary. Every group will develop one and they will often draw from it. Keith Richards once stated that the Stone's basically have only written two original tunes and the rest are variations. Obviously that's an exaggeration but I follow his point.

I thought it harked back to their old sound, maybe late 80's. Kind of reminded me of Iron Maiden in places. It was OK though, better than St Anger.

Yeah I know the riff you're refering too. Where Kirk and James play the same riff in sync.
Could be just Kirk double tracked...not sure...very Maiden though, which is fine.
