My current Beach Boys fixation

I have developed an interesting Beach Boy fixation.

I've always had a moderate interest but got a couple BB books for Xmas- and have really been delving in (including a book that is their version of the lewisohn recording sessions book)--

What is most interesting is how, had Smile been released prior to Pepper, would Pepper have looked poor in comparison?

It would not have made Pepper look bad, but it would have notched them closer, problem was Brian Wilson did not have a equal writing partner and he burnt out.

Anybody who wants to experience how close The Beach Boys were to the Beatles at one time, only needs to listen to "Good Vibrations, " once, to then consider this fact: It was released 10 months BEFORE Sgt. Pepper!

The Beach Boys late 60s-Early 70s output was fantastic. So many great songs like Disney Girls, Long Promised Road, It's About Time, Never Learn Not To Love, Forever, Be With Me, Slip On Through, etc. They really showed that they were so much more than Brian Wilson then.

I wouldn't say he was 85% of the pie, but he was definitely the biggest chunk and no one else in the group compares. All I was saying is that there are so many great songs that weren't written by Brian. Dennis especially had some great songs in the late 60s/Early 70s.

I'll go with Rick on this one! They could all write but no-one could compare with Brian during the sixties (certainly up until 67 anyway). After his breakdown they all had to chip in and certainly some of their finest songs during the 70's were from the rest of the group.
Love in particular "Santa Ana Winds" and also one of Brians great 2 minute masterpieces "Good Timin".

Well actually they got alot better in the late 80's; when John (uncle Jessie) Stamos became the drummer.
Who could forget that classic,harmony filled balled "Forever".

'Forever' is by far my favorite Beach Boys tune!! The Dennis Wilson version, not the John Stamos version of course!
