Yeah, I thought it did a bit. I don't care though, they're both good songs.(though I like the Petty song better myself) :)

i heard an MP3 of the two tracks. The verses sound very similar, but i doubt that John and Flea would consciously rip off another song

I haven't heard the RHCP song yet, so I couldn't tell you. I do know that Mary Jane's Last Dance has one of the all-time greatest music videos to go along with it.
And in the end...

That's ludicrous. They sound none alike. The entire melody and chorus is totally different, different styles, different tempo, a whole new ballpark.

Notice this though - someone put up this website and compared the similar bits: http://rhripoff.ytmnd.com/

...but also notice they sped up the Tom Petty song and totally ignored the chorus which to me is the important bit..and the most distinctive. That's what defines the song to me. Both songs have a totally different mood - the Tom Petty one is a stoner's mood, sort-of sad, and the Chili Peppers song is more rampant, rocky, uplifting. Totally different, no matter how that website tries to draw comparisons.

Of course... not nearly so blatant as "Get a Job" by Offspring that song.. sounds just like ObLaDi ObLaDa.

(Sing to the tune of OBlaDi...)

My friend's got a girlfriend
Man he hates that bitch
He tells me every day
He says "man I really gotta lose my chick
In the worst kind of way"

She sits on her ass
He works his hands to the bone
To give her money every payday
But she wants more dinero just to stay at home
Well my friend
You gotta say:

I won't pay, I won't pay ya, no way
na, na, Why don't you get a job
Say no way, say no way ya, no way
na, na, Why don't you get a job

I guess all his money, well it isn't enough
To keep her bill collectors at bay
I guess all his money, well it isn't enough
Cause that girl's got expensive taste

I won't pay, I won't pay ya, no way
na, na, Why don't you get a job
Say no way, say no way ya, no way
na, na, Why don't you get a job

Well I guess it ain't easy doing nothing at all oh yeah
But hey man free rides just don't come along
every day

Let me tell you about my other friend now

My friend's got a boyfriend man she hates that dick
She tells me every day
He wants more dinero just to stay at home
Well my friend
You gotta say:

I won't pay, I won't pay ya, no way
na, na, Why don't you get a job
Say no way, say no way ya, no way
na, na, Why don't you get a job
oh yeah
I won't give you no money
I always pay
na, na, Why don't you get a job
Say no way, say no way ya, no way
na, na, Why don't you get a
job!
Everyone's talkin' 'bout the President
We all chip in for a bag of cement

that Offspring song is pretty similar. The Vines had a song on their first record called Factory which sounded a lot like Ob-La-Di as well
