I'm sure there are more, the but the first ones that popped into my head were:

- Red Hot Chili Peppers' Greatest Hits - picked it up after seeing them at the Bridge School Benefit that Paul headlined in 2004 - I played this one over and over in my car.

- Madonna's The Immaculate Collection (the first one)

- George's "Best of Dark Horse" album - I know it's not an all-encompassing album, but it was a great introduction to George's solo music, paired with All Things Must Pass of course.

- Travis has a great "Singles" album out too...but then again, all of their albums are wonderful. :D

Lionel Richie-The Definitive Collection
Blondie-Greatest Hits: Sound and Vision (worth it for "Rapture Riders" alone!)
Prince-The Very Best of Prince
Van Halen-Best of Volume 1
Dire Straits-Money For Nothing
INXS-Shine Like It Does:The Anthology
Laura Branigan-The Best of Branigan

I'm really not a fan of greatest hits albums. The only ones I like are ones I've either made myself. Apart from Queen II, I like that one for some reason.

The CD so nice, I named it twice!

I understand your point about greatest hits albums, but that's sort of what I was getting at - they don't work for some people, but for others I almost think that's all you need. (Especially if the artist was basically a singles artist)
And in the end...
