Best Greatest Hits Albums

Postby maccastheman » Sun Apr 02, 2006 5:08 pm

Okay, so we all know some artists make great albums, some make great singles, and some (like Macca) make both.
Some artists really can't be represented well with a greatest hits CD because of the sheer volume of incredible work (Beatles). And some greatest hits CDs miss the mark by not including all of the hits or by including a lot of filler.
That being said, what do you think the most solid single-disc greatest hits albums are?

Here's my list:

Chuck Berry - The Great 28
James Brown - 20 All-time Greatest Hits
Beach Boys - Endless Summer
Al Green - Greatest Hits
Elton John - Greatest Hits
Steve Miller Band - Greatest Hits 1974-1978
Abba - Gold
Erasure - Pop! The First 20 Hits
Pet Shop Boys - Discography
Squeeze - Singles - 45s and Under
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - Greatest Hits
Pulp - Hits
Nick Lowe - Basher - The Best of Nick Lowe
Blur - Best of
Crowded House - Recurring Dream - The Very Best of Crowded House
Pretenders - Singles
Blur - Best of
And in the end...

The Eagles - Greatest Hits
Crowded House - Recurring Dream
Steve Miller Band - Greatest Hits
Fleetwood Mac - Greatest Hits
The Police - The Singles

I suppose I could go on and on...so I'll leave it at five
I go back so far... I'm in front of me!

Crowded House - Recurring Dream

Yeah, it's even better if you were lucky enough to find the double cd with the live album included.

Ironically- I always thought Macca has lacked a proper retrospective--

Yeah, no filler on All the Best or Wings Greatest...

But really nothing comprehensive for a novice. Even Wingspan has holes (i.e. no Spies Like Us).

Why was Blurs so good it made the list twice?

I'm really not a fan of greatest hits albums. The only ones I like are ones I've either made myself. Apart from Queen II, I like that one for some reason.

cool thread, as some greatest hits albums "work" and some just don't

a few faves:

Blur - The Best Of

The Best Of Chuck Berry

Rolling Stones - 40 Licks

a Foo Fighters best of would be very good as they are a great singles band
May sweet memories of friends from the past
Always comes to you, when you look for them
