I met him at Graceland on the 25th anniversary of Elvis Presley's death. (I only had to drive 2 hours to get there, so I'm not that crazy, lol. ) The man just lives and breathes music.
He's also written several other excellent books about American roots music. (Feel Like Going Home, Lost Highway, Searching for Robert Johnson)
His latest is an excellent book about Sam Cooke called Dream Boogie. I'm currently reading it and losing a lot of sleep at night because I can't put it down before I go to bed.
I also like Lester Bangs a lot simply because of how irreverent he could be. The first compilation of his writings, Psychotic Reactions and Carburetor Dung, will have you rolling out of your chair with laughter. I liked how they portrayed him in the film Almost Famous.
Those are really the only two rock journalists I can claim to be a fan of, the rest I just tolerate, lol. (And don't get me started on Jann Wenner again!
