I love the album ( By the way the first I got with My fave group)

Same here, this was the first Beatles album I ever bought. An old Parlophone record with the teal blue label and gatefold sleeve. It's in pretty bad shape these days though...played it to death. Then when it came out on cd, my copy developed some really bad mould, and most of the songs became unplayable. I've had a lot of bad luck with this album. But great songs, I love the album, 14 songs you get great value... with 14 good songs to play you can hardly call it 'weak' by any stretch. Even the 'weakest' track Mr Moonlight has a cool sound to it and great Lennon vocals.

There seems to be some revisionism towards the status of Beatles for Sale album. Back in 87? or around about then there was a survey done of the greatest albums ever made and about 100 dj's/musicians/writers etc were asked to nominate their favourites.

Guess what?

Beatles for Sale came in at about 60ish... they made a book out of this and had a glossy picture for each album -
Can't remember what the book was called... but it is a good book.
The 100 greatest albums?

Now - after Ian McDonald's critical pasting of Beatles for Sale - the album is considered as dodgy...

but if you read in detail about his notes you will notice that he had positive things to say about

1) no reply (liked lyrics)
2) im a loser
3) rock n roll music (liked excitement..)
4) every little thing
5) eight days a week
6) baby's in black (liked the mix of waltz/ballad)
7) i don't want to spoil the party (liked country excursion)
kansas city.. (liked paul's singing)
9) what your doing (liked experimentation)

so for a so called dodgy album to have at least 9 tracks that obtained praise in some form or another by a guy that was super critical is an indication of the album's real worth.

Wish the sound quality were better...
(i'm listening the Mono version, does the stereo sound any better?)

that is right, great song.


I find this album very, very underrrated. If it wasn't for Mr Moonlight and Everybody's Trying To Be My baby, this would be regarded generally as a good early-Beatles album. I enjoy this more than Help and PPM (probably), and it's almost the equal of WTB.

Imagine if they'd put I Feel Fine and She's A Woman on! To suggest that they were having a little period of writer's block at this point is rediculous

And what the heck is wrong with those 2 songs? They're both brilliant. Mr Moonlight has a hot sultry vibe to it and a killer Lennon vocal...and ETTBMB is a jaunty rockin lil George vocal...it's rock n roll man! So those 2 songs make the album 'not good'? Hmmm...

what i mean is fo rthe album's general acclaim. they are the weakest songs on the album. but i do love them, honest!

It is an OK album, but it doesn´t have the freshness of Please Please Me and With The Beatles.
