A hard day's night

It's a nice little film. I do think it gets a tad too much props and publicity as a film. It's cute in places and funny in places - but all of its hype makes it a bit too heavy in righting up its greatness. The best part about the film is that it never took itself too seriously. I think it's a nice little film but it's hardly a great film or even a great rock n roll film. I think "The Rose" was much more powerful in its impact. Spinal Tap was much more funnier. "Hail, hail, Rock N Roll" and "Don't look back" were better documentaries and much more revealing. In terms of Beatle-dom, the documentary "Rock Show" is much more powerful than imagine, Hard days night. And i expect (well - i can - can't i) that the new Back in the USA will be even better Nove 19th or something. The Rap parody "Men without hats" is quite possibly one of the funniest music movies of all time. I think that "Purple Rain" (dating myself) was much more passionate, hard-hitting , and its musical numbers were much more powerful than anything seen in film. Granted The Rose was a bit too pretenious and the acting in Purple Rain was not top-notch - Nonetheless, for music passion, i would have to place all of the other films i mentioned above "A Hard day's night". Like i said, it's a nice little film but hardly worth the praise and the hype of the media in its latest re-release. I never thought a couple of Lennon wise-cracks or Paul's taking about his grandfather's hygien makes this movie the "Citizen Kane" of music movies. Just because it's the Beatles - doesn't make it the most brilliant thing ever - Again, i'd take "Let it be" or Rock Show" or "Imagine" over Hard Days night and i think "Help" is even better in terms of funny bits and colour. Anyway, one man's view. Don't believe the hype. [^]

The "he's a clean old man" line was a parody on Wilford Brambell's character on the Brit sitcom "Steptoe and Son". His son always called him a "dirty old man". Sanford and Son was based on that show.

Believe the hype, folks. HDN is the best rock and roll movie ever. Check it out. The Rose and Purple Rain better? I can't agree. Not even close. This movie captures Beatlemania...awesome. Just one man's opinion. There's another earlier thread on this great movie, by the way.

We disagree. Check out the sequences in Purple Rain either "COmputer Blue", "Let's go Crazy", "Beautiful Ones" versus the Beatles lip synching in HDN. Midler's performance in the Rose is one of the greatest music performance in film.

Hard days' night is a nice rock n roll film but it's just a notch above an Elvis Presley film (which is why people think it's Citizen Kane like).

We sure do, Chris. Purple Rain has some of the worst acting I've ever seen. Only Prince fanatics need bother. The little people in the Wizard of Oz did a better job of acting than the runt from Minnesota. The music scenes were OK, because in his day, Prince was a great guitarist. The Rose?--Bette Midler makes me want to hurl. Might as well watch "A Star is Born". I think Janis would turn in her grave with that stinker being loosly based on her life. And i do say loosely. As for HDN being a notch above an Elvis movie, that's just daft. I might put Help! in that catagory, because it's just silly.

Guy, you strike a nerve there, man. Sure, Prince's acting was insipid in Purple Rain (he was a bit better than GH in HDN) but, c'mon, he blows the BEatles off the screen in terms of power and passion on celluoid. Maybe, cause i was 16 when Rain came out, but to me, it was more powerful than anything i have seen or heard on Film or CD. And i mean that.

Besides, other than Patti Boyd, does HDN have any great hot babes in it. Hell, no! P-Rain has the wonderful Apollonia! AYE PAPPY! THat seals the deal for me. Hot babes, great songs, phenomenal performances!! Shoot, and i dug a Star is Born - Kristofferson was decent while Steisand was a bit cheesey - some of her songs in that movie are goddamn powerful (The ending with her doing Watch Closely Now is freakin' Brilliant). I only wish Elvis played the Kristofferson role - it would have been either the greatest thing on film or the worst piece of crap ever !! Either way - Steisand and a fat PResely at the end would have been intriguing.

You can watch Paul's grandfather all u want - I'd rather catch the beatiful Applonia any day!! P=Rain guy!

I sure feel you about youth being a big factor. I was 11 when Rock Show came out (two weeks before December 8, 1980) and i can still get misty eyed thinking about how my dad went out of his way to take me to see it. We lived in Central Connecticut and we traveled nearly 1 1/2 out of our way to see it. It was so long ago that when i watched it (in 1980 based on a 1976 tour) the sequences didn't seem dated. When i asked my dad why they had razor blades around their necks (Denny and Jimmy do if you look close enough), he said it was to snort coke. He was right!!

My dad said Soily and Rock Show were the kind of hard-hitting music Paul needed to do more often. My dad was two years younger than Paul.

Anyway, i remember feelin' great about seeing it since my dad said it was the closest thing i'd get to seeing Paul live for a long time. He was right!! But, that movie probably like a hard days night probably means a lot cause it reminds us of youth ,etc.

Purple Rain in the summer of 1984 is the closest thing that anybody of my generation born after 1969 will ever get to the power and majesty of the Beatles.

Seeing Hard Days night at 9 in 1964 would probably be like seeing religion at the time!! So, we came off that at two different angles.

Steisand is goddamn powerful. Limiting her politics and concentrating on the voice, the woman is amazing. Her version of "Somewhere" from West side story or merely his vocals on "A Star is born" are extremely powerful. In her younger days, she sang a bit more subtle instead of trying to blow all her notes like most singers. I still to this day dig Barbara Steisand even if she should be hanged for her politics

Out of context A HARD DAY'S NIGHT could be seen as not such a great film. Comparing it to A STAR IS BORN, SPINAL TAP and PURPLE RAIN is like comparing UP IN SMOKE to HORSE FEATHERS. They are historically too far apart to be relevant to each other. A HARD DAY'S NIGHT is a great film that is a bit dated. It doesn't surprise me that younger people don't get it. It's very English in its humour for one thing. For two, it was 1964. If A HARD DAY'S NIGHT were made in 1966 or 1967 instead, I'm sure it would have been a much different film.

With all of it's obvious blunders, like no cords going to the Beatle's guitars when they're playing - I love this film. Seeing this as a kid in the early 60's was exciting. And there was enough music and visual action in the film to even keep a kid interested, since much of the dialog was a bit hard for a kid to comprehend in those days.

Well, I suppose, you would have to be before you could be a has been, and he never was.
