Poor Sleeves

Postby jamie » Wed Jul 16, 2003 12:17 pm

why in this day and age of high technology do beatles cds have such crap sleeves - ive got 5 albums and only 'sgt pepper' has anything of worthy note- 'revolver' , 'rubber soul' etc all have poor quality photos and virtually nothing to read !

I think most of them they've tried to duplicate the original packaging (in miniature form, obviously).

But you're right - a missed opportunity.

OK, you've given me an excuse to go into list mode:

Best Beatles album covers:
1 Abbey Road - an iconic image.
2 Rubber Soul - a beautiful photo that must have looked so cool at the time.
3 Sgt Pepper - it's got to be up there somewhere for all the reasons we all know....
4 Revolver - lots to look at

Worst favourite Beatles album covers:
1 White Album - I know it was making a statement - but what is there to like about it as a cover?!
2 Let It Be - come on, please try harder
3 Please Please Me - typical of its time, but not particularly inspired (despite the "unusual" angle etc)

aye - the covers are all iconic of course- but with the sgt pepper 1987 version you get a really good booklet - the others should be the same- are those photos on revolver et al seriously the originals ? i didnt realise that (ive never seen an original vinyl). revolver is particulary poor - you can just about make out whose who ![:D]

But of course the original 12" sleeves were perfect for such detailed pictures and artwork. Today's CD size can not capture the mood and spirit of the original. But the music POPS, eh?

GOOD DAY ALL!!

Talking of sleeves, loved the LP gatefold sleeve for Wings Over America. That painting in the middle....

Looks a little daft now of course - but that's the seventies for ya. (What's was with that pink scarf?!)
