Actually, it was a 5-string Wal. He uses it on Free As A Bird too.
I wish he'd use his Rickenbacker a bit more. That one sounds and looks so much more cooler than the Höfner. His bass-playing skills went throught the roof in about 1965, right when he started to use his Rick.
I have a violin-Höfner too, and I disagree about them being crappy. For a hollow-body bass, it gives rather a full sound. And yes, the small frets allow faster playing, which is also good. And mine doesn't go out of tune really quick.
