what do you reckon? that bass guitar has to be the biggest memorabillia item ever huh? am i right in thinking it was nicked once? im sure i recall hearing that.... maybe im just tired. i wonder if its a copy he uses on tour, i would imagine it would be, and the work done to that cheap instrument must be incredible. i know he uses it on recordings.

That was the subject of the "My Brave Face" video in 1989. I think it was all in good fun, however.

I believe he has several. He did say, back in 1989, that when he got one of them out, (at Elvis Costello's urging, since he thought it had a great sound--Paul then said that it was tough to keep in tune, but I digress) it still had the set list from the 1966 tour taped to back.....and yes---he can make that baby talk!!!

Yeah, I know he has AT LEAST two. But probably a few more. Wasn't the original one stolen? Yeah, they are hard to keep in tune. I used to have an old hollow-bodied Hofner bass myself. (Not violin shaped though. Looked more like the one Stu Sutcliffe played.) Sound quality is crap. They're actually pretty crappy basses. But of course, Macca can "make it talk."

Oh, one plus about Hofner's though, (something that Macca even mentioned himself), is that the frets are really small and close together, so it's a lot easier to play fast bass lines. I think NetherLen and I had this discussion before. He has a violin bass himself.

Very cool info. I find it interesting that in the 1989 and 1993 tours he used another Bass as well as the Hof (Rickenbacker? I dont know much about them, obviously). On this last tour, it was Hofner all the way, no? (when he was playing bass, of course)

Yeah, '93 was Hofner all the way. During '89, he switched between the Hofner and what I think is a 5-string Rickenbacker.

Actually, it was a 5-string Wal. He uses it on Free As A Bird too.

I wish he'd use his Rickenbacker a bit more. That one sounds and looks so much more cooler than the Höfner. His bass-playing skills went throught the roof in about 1965, right when he started to use his Rick.

I have a violin-Höfner too, and I disagree about them being crappy. For a hollow-body bass, it gives rather a full sound. And yes, the small frets allow faster playing, which is also good. And mine doesn't go out of tune really quick.
