The 20 best songs Paul has ever written.

Postby garrystanton » Wed Feb 26, 2014 12:50 pm

Well, here's an interesting wee question for us all. This topic concerns the 20 best, musically and lyrically, that our man
has ever come up with. It should include every era, from earliest days right up to the newest releases. I think some of his commercial
songs will probably end up on the list (including mine) but the main thrust is to survey what the good folks on here
reckon are his bestest mostest wonderfulest compositions. It can, of course, include Beatles tunes but in this case should be a song identifiable a Paul song. And you all know what they are. For instance, despite the compositional controversy surrounding 'In My Life', we all know that this is a John song. Conversely, 'I want to hold your hand' seems to be pretty much a straight split, so will not qualify here.
Shouldn't be that easy, and should put the argumentative, debating cat amongst the pigeons.....!
my list, in purely random order of chronology or wonderfulness, is:

PAPERBACK WRITER
HEY JUDE
PENNY LANE
MAYBE I'M AMAZED
CAN'T BUY ME LOVE
NINETEEN HUNDRED AND EIGHTY-FIVE
MONKBERRY MOON DELIGHT
SGT.PEPPER'S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND (and reprise)
FROM A LOVER TO A FRIEND
SOUVENIR
BACK SEAT OF MY CAR
JET
WITH A LITTLE LUCK
YOU TELL ME
DEAR FRIEND
APPRECIATE
ARROW THROUGH ME
GET ON THE RIGHT THING
LITTLE LAMB DRAGONFLY
BACK IN THE USSR

OK guys, over to you.....
\M/
So I stood with a knot in my stomach,
And I gazed at that terrible sight
Of two youngsters concealed in a barrel,
Sucking monkberry moon delight.

Well-interesting topic that I find almost impossible to answer. I sort of noticed that you think Arrow through me or From a lover to a friend are better songs than Yestserday since I didn t find that little song on your list. Right now I pass on this one-there are to many and I always find it hard to compare Pauls work within the Beatles context with his solo/wings material.

It's a CD I'd kill to own but I'm afraid everybody's version would be different. I think narrowing this down to 20 would be extremely difficult because my moods and tastes seem to change weekly. It would literally take me weeks to draft a list of 20 and then I'd see somebody else's list and immediately add/subtract a song from mine. Great idea but what a challenge!!

Using the completely unscientific method of "The 20 McCartney songs with the highest play count in my iTunes library", I get this (Beatles songs excluded)- I can guarantee half this list wouldn't even be considered for the shortlist of a genuine top 20, but in terms of number of spins, this is what I've chosen the most-

Dance Tonight
Jet
Maybe I'm Amazed (I still say this is his greatest ever song, Beatles included)
Calico Skies
Too Many People
Ram On
Little Willow
Dear Boy
3 Legs
Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey
Heart Of The Country
Band On The Run
Jenny Wren
Ever Present Past
Mr Bellamy
Monkberry Moon Delight
The Back Seat Of My Car
Bluebird
That Was Me
The End Of The End

Great subject for debate. I'm going to exclude rockers in my list.

YESTERDAY (how can you not put this in?)
FOR NO ONE
ELEANOR RIGBY
PENNY LANE
FOOL ON THE HILL
HEY JUDE
BLACKBIRD
LET IT BE
MAYBE I'M AMAZED
WANDERLUST
TUG OF WAR
HERE TODAY
PUT IT THERE
YVONNE
SOMEDAYS
CALICO SKIES
LITTLE WILLOW
AT THE MERCY
RIDING TO VANITY FAIR
EARLY DAYS

(I rejected WE CAN WORK IT OUT, because John's contribution is what makes that song complete; I wanted to put MY VALENTINE on this, but I feel it was too derivative, too much of a "let me try to write a song that fits this album of covers I'm making"-- more craft than art; TWO OF US came thisclose to making it, but even though it was written by Paul about him and Linda, I still associate the song-- because of John's dueting with him-- as very Lennon/McCartney; it was hard not to include HERE, THERE AND EVERYWHERE, and if you asked me next week, or next month, that might make the cut; I love FOLLOW ME from CHAOS, so it was hard not to include that one, too; MAMUNIA, ONE OF THESE DAYS, PIPES OF PEACE...yeah, it's hard to narrow this down to 20...and I know I'm not mentioning many other great ones)
in years to come/they may discover/what the air we breathe and the life we lead are all about/but it won't be soon enough for me
