Classical music where to start?

What is the best way to learn classical music. i wanted it for very long time but how do I start??

Here's some of my favorite composers:
Barber
Beethoven
Bizet
Brahms
Dvorak
Mozart
Tchaikovsky

I always liked classical music and film scores. It really started by buying cd's of my favorite movies soundtracks and from there it opened a whole new door for me. It was easier to make the transition from cinema scores to actual chamber music. I like a lot of melodic pieces. I even managed to research and find out who some of my favorite artists liked as far as classical musicians.

Ease yourself in with working classical! completely unfamiliar classical pieces can be daunting at first, so working Classical is ideal. More contemporary classical composers like Ludivico Einaudi and Micheal Ó suilleabhain have great edge. Vaughan Williams, Grieg, Liszt and Bach and Handel are very melodic. Unlike rock songs you have to expect extremely long forgettable rambling passages which take some getting used to.

Bach is the MAN!! What I found most important is to relax....this is a very different musical form than most are used to....the analogy I like to use is that Rock music is a microwave dish and classical is more of a crock pot dinner. Both are very rewarding to the listener, if properly prepared.

I'd say a very familiar place to start would be to break out Disney's "Fantasia"....sounds nutty, but that movie looks just as good with your eyes closed. The music does the talking.

I like Mozart on the whole best...but Beethoven's moonlight sonata is one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written...ever...

wonder if you ever got into it, eddie ?

if not...try beethovens piano concertos or the 9th symphony and/or 3rd, bach's brandenburg concertos, vivaldis four seasons (or, heck, any vivaldi...or, just as great, corelli will do just fine), wagners 'ring' cycle overtures, mozarts 25th symphony and/or any of his concertos...

mahler can be quite interesting, too

Not really. But on Sunday night they classical concerts on TV, some of them are great and relaxing!

I agree with lampie1970, Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata is transcendent. If you wanna go light, try Howard Shore's Lord of the Rings soundtracks- especially The Two Towers or the original Star Wars (as if anyone weren't aware of that by now!) by John Williams.
