Tom Petty is very over-rated. A decent song-writer, a weak singer, some of his songs are very good. Others are very white trash. I don't think he is as talented as the hype. I feel the same about Spingsteen who used the 9/11 tragedy to sort of hype his album (just an opinion). Springsteen has always struck me as being a bit of a phony before 9/11 he was loving in Cali in Beverly Hills in the early 90's and recording with some of the California cats. Then, all a sudden, he's blue collar bruce the working class hero to pick up the good old USA. Springsteen can't sing, he writes ok songs, but the whole 9/11 hype is a bit preachy in my view. I guess some sharp marketing guy told Bruce to release the album as close to 9/11 as possible to maximize the sympathy.
In my view, Billy Joel is a true artist and one who gets no love from the media. Joel is a true song-writer and has written some classic stuff.
You can leave Springsteen and Petty off my list of greatest of all time. Though, i admit they wrote some good classic rock. But, past 50 both of their acts are a bit thin sort of like their hairstyles.
I dig Paul much more because he isn't a blue collar phony
