another great singer, gone too early.

probably, in the end, as much by her own missteps as anything else...still...she could flat out sing with the very best

and for at least awhile, her musical instincts were the best in the land

a far better out and out singer than many these days.

her style, while long absent, will be sorely missed

hopefully, she may have finally found the peace which she ran so hard to find

Quite the talent. In fact maybe one of the best pure voices you'll hear for a long time. She could flat out sing. RIP.

agree with all that is said about her voice. however...

in 1992 she was a superstar. just starring in the bodyguard with kevin costner (which grossed 400 million). the movie's soundtrack sold 45 million worldwide (which is roughly the combined sales total of all of lady gaga and rihanna's albums to date). she was as beautiful as any movie star in the world. and had a bigger voice than any other singer on the charts.

then in 2002, she infamously told diane sawyer "crack is whack'. like dozens of other pop culture icons and millions of others whose troubles don't make headlines, she was overmatched with addiction.

when the news blew up with reports of her death, fans talked of being stunned and shocked. was it sad and tragic? obviously. but stunning and shocking? this was not a plane crash. the time period between the bodyguard and crack is whack...is equal to the time period between crack is whack and her death. for a solid decade, she had been in the headlines much more for her tribulations than her artistry.

i was in a supermarker checkout line just saturday morning glancing at a national enquirer cover featuring whitney houston. she looked bad. real bad. it is tragic. and it is sad. but i can't say i am one bit surprised.

damn shame.
