Lennon and Eminem

I'm not really a rap fan, but I think Lennon would have liked Eminem's new song "Lose Yourself". Does anyone else agree or disagree and why?[?]

I don't know what Lennon would have thought of Eminem. Somebody asked George what he thought of Eminem, and he said, "Isn't that a type of candy?" [:D] He was just joking, of course. He was asked in a chat room. He kind of brushed off the quetion. This wasn't long after he said Oasis and U2 were shallow and that nobody would remember their music. I agree with the former, but not the latter. [;)]

I think John would say he understands where Eminem is coming from, but I don't think he would appreciate the violence and hate in Eminem's songs.

BTW - I'm trying to be objective about all of this. I CAN'T STAND Eminem!!! (Now he'll probably diss me in one of his songs. [;)] )

Who knows how much John would have matured from age 40 to 62. If you froze the early 70's Lennon, maybe he would have liked it. I think at 62, he would be even more outspoken and intolerant of differing ideas and music than he was in his mid-late thirties.

I have never listened to this M&M guy.
I have heard there is a lot of violence and hatred in his music and he and his Mum don't get on.
He is probably just fakin it for all the attention.
He reminds me of Dennis Rodman and Madonna.
This "Oh, look at me, I am so outrageous."
Yawn.
I've seen it before....[|)]
I tend to agree with George, I can't be bothered with this stuff.

The interesting thing about Rap is that anyone can do it in 5 seconds.
It does not require any talent or musicianship.
You don't have to have any songwriting ability whatsoever.
It's even easier than Punk and a lot more boring.
At least Punk was exciting.

For most rappers that's true. But Eminem imho is a lot better than 'most rappers'. His song 'Stan', with Dido doing the chorus, is very haunting.

No he can't sing, yes it all sounds aggressive. But:

quote:I have heard there is a lot of violence and hatred in his music and he and his Mum don't get on.

The sound you make is muzak to my ears
You must have learned something in all those years...

...Ah How do you sleep? How do you sleep at night?

A little hatred can produce some great music. Musically, Eminem's songs can be compared to HDYS. Not great melodically, but the lyrics and the way it's sung always get to me.

And yeah, John was also a very jealous, insecure man.
He also loved Paul very much.
Why waste one's limited time on hatred and violence?
I mean, we only have so much free time- why am I gonna waste it on
Dennis/M&M/Madonna, etc etc??
I'm gonna wanna listen to excellent music like the new George Harrison album, for example or next week, enjoy Paul's new DVD.
And I can turn on the news any second and get all the hate and violence there. No wonder I don't watch the news. If the world ends tommorrow- I will have missed it cause I'm enjoying George's album.

I agree wholeheartedly, deeply. I have no tangible explanation for this...

Yoko's speculated that John would in fact be intrigued by the art forms of rap, as well as the internet.

I disagree. I'm not a huge lover of rap, but it does take talent. At least, it shows in the more talented rappers. I have to agree with Brains. Eminem is one talented dude. I've listened closely to his lyrics, and I finally saw what all the fuss is about. The dude can really write. Seriously. And as far as rappers go, he is an excellent rapper. Have you ever tried rapping a song? I mean REALLY tried? It's actually very complicated. Especially songs like Eminem's. So yeah, it definitely takes talent. Am I fan? It depends on the artist, but not really.
