Oh, I can't recall the full story, but as I recall, it had a rather mundane meaning...it was a holder of some kind. I think someone, possibly a fan, gave it to him, and he liked it so much he wore it for quite a long time.
I wish I could be more specific...but I'll have to see if I can find the reference to it...I think I'd read about it in one of John's biographies.
