I think that it's very rare to find a cover version of any song that tops the original recording, regardless of the people involved.

Of course he would have approved- she sang that song specifically because of the war- and she did it the way she did because she wanted the words to be heard- and John loved people covering his songs- but she did it for peace and to think he would not have approved is quite baffling to me.
