MOSCOW (AFP) - A three-metre (10-foot) long yellow submarine made of drinks cans and plastic has been unveiled in the Russian city of Yekaterinburg to mark the 65th birthday of late Beatles frontman John Lennon.

A likeness of the legendary singer's head appears through a porthole in the turret of the submarine, which celebrates the Beatles's bizarre classic chart-topping 1966 song "Yellow Submarine."

The unveiling of the monument, anchored in the middle of a lake in Yekaterinburg, was part of celebrations by the local "Beatles Club" to be attended by the British consul to Yekaterinburg, Echo Moskvi radio station said.

Russia will mark John Lennon’s 65th birthday with unveiling of a monument to the late ex-Beatle near the Urals city of Yekaterinburg.

The monument will have the form of the three-meter-high Yellow Submarine that will surface later on Sunday with Lennon’s figure aboard in the Utyatskoye lake in the village of Istok.

The floating monument is made of metal and foam plastic. It will anchor near the shore.

Lennon’s widow, Yoko Ono, is invited to attend the unveiling.
