JOHN Lennon's largest work of art is to go on show in the airport that bears his name.

Liverpool John Lennon Airport chiefs were jubilant today that the ex-Beatle's magic eye mosaic is to be loaned to them for at least 12 months.

The 16ft by 6ft image, made from more than 17,000 tiny tiles, originates from the swimming pool of the Surrey home Lennon was setting up with his first wife Cynthia during the 60s.

The eye's current owner, Wirral-based demolition consultant Wladek Reszczynski, says he turned down an offer of more than £500,000 for the mosaic two years ago.

The giant ceramic has been fully restored since he bought it in 1992.

He said: "I have loaned it to the airport, initially for a year.

"With Capital of Culture looming, I would rather it was looked at than locked away in some vault."

The long-term future of the mosaic is uncertain. It may eventually be sold at auction.

But within weeks, it is expected to be housed near the airport entrance.

Neil Pakey, managing director of Liverpool John Lennon Airport, said: "This is tremendous news. It will help us further expand the John Lennon experience for all our visitors and customers."

John Lennon designed the Eye in 1965 for the outdoor pool of the new home.

The idea, now hailed as one of the best pieces of psychedelic art, was based on the "all seeing eye" taken from the teachings of the spiritual adviser of the

Beatles at the time, the Maharishi Yogi.

The mosaic later become famous as a forerunner of the Beatles' famous 1967 "summer of love" period.
